Amazon, focused on their goal of improving the speed for the last mile of delivery, planned to renovate and occupy an existing 300,000 square foot, two-story warehouse building with a partial cellar, located on Foster Avenue in Brooklyn, New York for a delivery station. The warehouse building required a gut renovation, including removing and rebuilding the 2nd floor slab to accommodate the structural load for a parking facility. The project consisted of the following program areas:
• 145,400 sf 1st Floor warehouse space
• 131,000 sf 2nd Floor parking for approximately 400 vehicles
• 14,400 sf 2nd Floor office space
• 21,875 sf Cellar mechanical space
Legacy Engineers was selected for the project, working alongside a national AE firm, because of their expertise in the local New York City Department of Buildings requirements for life safety systems. Legacy provided fire protection and fire alarm consulting engineering design services for the project; and peer review services of the HVAC, electrical and plumbing packages for code review and best practice recommendations.
The fire protection system consisted of a dry pipe sprinkler system for the parking/vehicle areas of the warehouse and a wet sprinkler system for the office space and back of house areas. A new manual/addressable fire alarm system was provided including a new front end fire alarm control panel, and initiating and notification devices.
